History: Her story summary can be found here Let me know if you need me to sum things up!

CRAU History and Impact: During her time in Derrington, Rei went through some emotional growth. It wasn’t just from going through horror after horror, seeing transformations of herself and people she knew. Two things had changed her during her previous time here: One, that she was far more physically vulnerable than she realized, and two people cared about her well-being. The latter was huge, as while she did push to move on from her survivor’s guilt and depression, the support network that arose from over network message, in-person interactions, and meeting people from various walks of life reminded her that there were people who wanted her to live- that it wasn’t just Miku or Kei. And that realization made the people who vanish hurt a little less- because while they were gone, it did not make the friendship vanish. They had been friends, even for a short time, which made it all the more precious.

Rei even ventured, clumsily, to make a friendship and a romantic relationship with Jesse McCree. It was a lot of pull and tug, as neither of them was sure of how to go forward, but they enjoyed flirting with one another. This is is a big deal, as Rei had been mourning the death of her dead fiance. She still does, quietly, but she has been trying to move on, both with her relationship with Jesse, and trying to connect with others in the world.

Rei had been also trying to learn how to defend herself, mostly in the form in learning how o shoot a gun. She had also been jogging frequently so she could run and sprint when the occasion called for it. While she knew she couldn’t do the same as others- she didn’t have combat magic, or super strength certainly- she wanted to make sure if things went badly, she could get out of the way, and not be the cause of someone’s death.

She doesn’t want to feel that guilt again, nor be the cause of someone else’s guilt if she were to die.

Personality:

In Rei’s canon, we are introduced to a story that is filled with grief, loss, and a shared nightmare. And as we’re introduced to Rei, we see that she is filled with that grief, from a recent loss of someone she cared deeply for, and for the misguided guilt of his death. With it, Rei’s ability to express herself, and her stronger emotions are stunted. While she is still able to function to the extent of being able to work and take care of her physical functions, she sounds and acts tired. Tired, and had walled off much of her emotion in order to keep going. As it is, Rei can no longer work for fashion magazines as she used to, as every photograph of a person reminds her sharply of what she lost.

But there’s more to Rei than just her grief. She’s independent, able to own a house for her and Miku to live in, with Miku as her hired assistant. Rei is also curious, even through her depression, venturing into a supposed haunted location and becoming disappointed that it wasn’t (though she learned later otherwise). When she loves too, she loves hard. We see this when she chases after her fiancee, Yuu, when she spots him in the haunted house. Rei is also capable of kindness to others, like offering Miku’s cat, Ruri, a chance to sniff and make the choice if she wanted to be petted.

With her morals, there’s the game mentality that’s reflected in her actions. By that, she has no problem in taking items if they would be of use to her and to her goals. This could be simply picking up random items in the dream, but also using items that once belonged to her dead fiancee, and too, opening his mail and reading it. She tells his friend, neither by phone number or by mail. It’s only once he comes by in person that Rei tells her fiancee’s friend the truth, that her fiancee, Yuu, is gone. We don’t know if she told him about reading or using his advice in the letters themselves.

This doesn’t speak well for Rei’s moral standing. However, while we see throughout that Rei is goal-oriented and driven by curiosity, she is also highly empathic. We see this early on, in dealing with another cursed person, Yoshimoro. Yoshi begs for Rei to wake her up, as this may be the only way to save her. Rei, through Miku, tracks Yoshi down, and Rei goes to see her in person, to help her if she can. Unfortunately, by the time Rei arrives, she’s too late, and only gets to see her vanish as she is spirited away. Still, Rei tries to find her and speak to her in the Manor of Sleep. Yoshi attacks her, and it’s with great reluctance that Rei fights back with her camera. It’s not Yoshi’s fault that she is the way she is right now, and Rei is keenly aware of it.

While Rei does not have the best morality in the world, she isn’t the worst either. She doesn’t want people to be hurt, even if it comes to risk to her own well-being.

This is both a good and bad thing. Rei puts herself at risk repeatedly throughout the game, as we see in Yoshi’s case, and with the other characters, we’ve introduced to- particularly her young assistant Miku. There is a point in the game where this can turn into a good or bad ending if Miku keeps doing down a certain path- and if she chooses to go down, we see Rei chasing after her, shouting that she needs to come back, that if she doesn’t it’s a very good chance she’ll die. Had Rei not been kicked out of the dream, she could have died with her. It didn’t matter at the time. What mattered to Rei was saving her friend. But then, it might have not been completely selfless.

Rei has been struggling and recovering from survivor’s guilt. The accident that killed her fiancee haunted her, as she was behind the wheel on the highway, and the car flipped on the rain-soaked road. She struggled and still struggles as to why she survived, and why she didn’t die instead, or along with him. It’s something that she’s struggled with, and a mental state that she’s had to work on to shake off, especially with the curse she, and other playable characters in the game. It’s better now that the curse has been lifted, and she was able to say goodbye to the man she loved but it is something that may flare up every so often.

Especially as she has to deal with helplessness. In becoming cursed, Rei becomes driven to find answers, in trying to figure out what’s happening to her, and use whatever means she can- including various books, researching people, or using possibly dangerous spiritual objects. Rei looks through ghost films, listens to terrified stories of past cursed victims, and fights various ghosts while she sleeps, many of which would terrify the average person. Even when she starts seeing spirits within her own home, Rei appears unruffled and keeps moving forward. However, when Miku can not wake up (which happens in the good and bad ending) we see Rei despondent on the couch, and seemingly unable to cope.

She does soon gain some hope afterward, but Rei did need help to get out of her funk. This is why having people she cares for, and who care for her, in turn, is important. They give her motivation, and while she can rally her friends, her friends can rally her in turn.

Which, despite all that Rei has gone through, all of the power she may have, her research ability...makes her much like any other human. She needs people in order to thrive.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:

Sixth sense: Born with the ability, her sixth sense allows her to do multiple things, the highlight of which is seeing spirits. This also means that she's more visible to ghosts and under the right circumstances, is far more likely to be possessed, particularly by powerful spirits.

Past Visions/Touch Psychic: Sometimes she can touch people or objects and see visions of the past of what's happened around that person or object. Sometimes it's as simple as walking into a location (but this is a fairly rare occurrence and would have to be a fairly powerful impression/memory left behind).

Dream walking: In the game, she's able to join Kei's and Miku's dreams. However, it’s debatable whether she can affect the dream herself; it’s far more likely that she can only join as an observer. We don’t know if she has any influence at all, but may just watch in their point of view, within their body. She can be ejected from the person she’s riding along with though, quickly thereafter, be ejected out of their dream.

Camera Obsurca: Using the camera and the various grades of film, she can do various things including:

Exorcism: Exorcises spirits from existing, or at least from that location for a certain amount of time

Taking photos of the unseen/Revealing the past: Where objects or useful locations are revealed, particularly when the film has developed

Repulse: repulsing spirits via channeling her sixth sense through the camera. Similar to Exorcism, Repulsing is something that happens with one shot, rather than a series of shots that takes all of a spirit’s health.

There are various upgrades that can be done with the camera, such as making the spirits slow down, but this is a basic camera without any added spirit orbs..

Weakness:

Sixth sense: it's always on. Always. She can't turn it off. It also makes her more visible to spirits.

Possession: She’s far more likely than the average person to become possessed by a ghost or spirit, or similar ilk than the average person. Her power makes it easier for such denizens to settle into her skin and sustain herself, especially if Rei is in a state of emotional compromise, such as heartbreak or despair.

Fighting ability: She doesn't know how to fight physically. She can only use her camera in combating spirits, and her physical abilities are, at best, at average fitness. She can run, but not very fast.

Camera overexposure: Rei, nor other users of the camera obscura can use the camera too much. Overuse has left other people into seeing too much of the Otherworld, and as such, has led to insanity, and or possession.

Home skills: She's messy and she's not very good at household chores, including cooking. Same goes for things such as first aid, or any domestic skills.

Reckless: When motivated (this can be as simple motivation as curiosity, anger, or any strong emotion), she can make some pretty reckless choices- including going places that she knows are dangerous. This can be anywhere from going to a haunted location wanting to see ghosts, to opening a door that was holding miasma at bay, to trying to find a person who has become dangerous against their own will.

Warping: Here are a few of my suggestions:

-Feeling of being watched, which sharpens when she uses her touch psychic or when she uses her camera obscura.

- Being blasted with the emotion of any past viewing that may occur- she knows what they were feeling, whether it was happiness or despair, and feel emotionally drained afterward. Also, a chance that she’s compromised- for example, if she was watching from the viewpoint of someone laughing, she may end up laughing herself for a few minutes after.

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Yes
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: While a good corruption arc is lovely, I like the horror when there’s some self-realization about themselves, for better or for worse. I also like it when there’s the ability to bond with other people and have moments of kindness towards one another, so you can see the best of people in the worst situations.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Not that I can think of! If it changes, I will absolutely update this and ensure that people know.
Additional Information: In bringing Rei back to the game, since it’s been awhile and I can’t remember everything, I’m going to have her memory a little vague, a little uncertain, unless an event or person is brought up first. I might have to look up their past CR
