Deerington Application

IN CHARACTER

Character Name: Rei Kurosawa
Canon: Fatal Frame Three
Canon Point: Post Canon, good ending

In-Game Tattoo Placement: On the chest, just below the collar bones
Current Health/Status: Alive/asleep/uninjured
Apparent Age: Early twenties
Actual Age: 23
Species: Human
History: For a general start and longer version of the various chapters, it can be found in the wiki here

The condensed version though is this: before the game started, Rei Kurosawa was driving with her fiancee, Yuu Asou, and got into an accident; as a result, he died. When the game starts, while on a freelance assignment, Rei goes to an abandoned manor to take photographs. There's rumors about the manor that when you go there, you meet the dead. She sees Yuu, and follows him, only to find herself in a different manor, also abadoned and covered with snow. After attempting to follow Yuu, she comes across a tattooed figure, and is shortly thereafter startled back to the real world by her assistant, Miku Hinasaki.

Rei has a nightmare of the manor she was transported to shortly thereafter, and while running away from the tattooed figure, she is touched by them. When she wakes up, she feels the pain of a tattoo etched into her shoulder, exactly where she was touched. She learns shortly thereafter that she has been cursed, due to two reasons: she went to the manor, and she cannot let go of her guilt due to Yuu's death.

From there on, Rei has recurring nightmares of the manor and is attacked by ghosts from what is called the Manor of Sleep, and learns that if she does not somehow resolve the situation, she, along with Miku and Yuu's friend Kei Amakura and his niece, Mio Amakura, will be spirited away from the real world. Rei uncovers the history of the Manor of Sleep, including why the Manor exists, and how it was originally part of the waking world.

In the end, Rei is able to defeat the strongest ghost, and send her off to the Otherworld in peace. Rei almost joins here when she sees Yuu crossing the Otherworld waters; instead, Yuu urges her to go back, and absorbs the tattoos.

Rei is taken from post game, where she has new resolve to live...if only because a part of Yuu is with her, just like a part of her is with Yuu.

Hometown/World: Earth, no hometown given. Can be assumed to be in Japan, but little more than that.

Personality:

When we first meet Rei Kurosawa, we see her climbing out of a car wreck. It's raining, and after one look at the wreckage, she falls to her knees.

This moment of despair is only the starting point of Rei's story and her development within. It could be taken that she's helpless, that she can't do anything because she's not someone.

Not so much. Even in her depression, Rei is functional, and is able to work, to investigate. Being without her fiancee does cause a certain amount of grayness in her life, and she misses him greatly. But even in her grief, and questioning why she survived, she continues to work, not just professionally, but for the survival of herself and others. We see this in the next scene of photographing the burnt out manor; we see this too throughout the game in where she takes notes, photographs, and copies of research in various folders that can be accessed throughout. When it comes to surviving, she doesn't rely on others to save her. She saves herself.

This doesn't mean that she has a complete independent streak. She does have her assistant, Miku, in her life, as well as Kei. Though she did meet them via an association with Yuu, she cares for them, and wants them to survive with her. When Miku is uncertain about whether they will survive, Rei comforts her; when Kei has suggestions on how to go about saving them from the curse, she listens and agrees-and even when it's wrong, she doesn't go 'I told you so'; she keeps going forward, and hopes that she can save him and his niece. Even when she finds out about another cursed victim, Rei manages to track her down. She's unable to wake the woman up, and the victim she shows signs of being spirited away, Rei does try to run for help. Even when things are not going the way she wants, Rei continues to try her best, especially when it means she can help someone.

However, this does not mean that Rei attempts to reach out for everyone. She mentions that she is the opposite of Yuu-that he was "kind and outgoing" where she may not see herself in that light. Indeed, we don't see her talking to the phone other then needed, nor are there records to show that she possessed a large group of friends. In fact, she didn't tell Kei what happened to Yuu until he showed up to her house in person. But her lack of kindness could be argued. She empathizes with the people in her life strongly, clearly enjoys petting Miku's black cat, Ruri, and tries to understand others. It could even be argued that if not for her empathy and care to be kind, she would not have ended the curse possessed in the manor of sleep.

This isn't to say that she's fearless, especially in this particular situation. We see her get scared numerous times, from the start of the game, to the end. There is one particular cut scene, in fact, that we see her in the bathroom, and a ghost slams against the door-Rei screams and huddles against the shower tiles. While nothing does come after her in the waking world, she does get scared, and startled by the situation and things that happen around her. But that doesn't stop her from taking a deep breath and going forward either. Sometimes, if she wants something badly enough, she will go past her fears and do things that are quite reckless. Which brings up another interesting point for her mechanics-Rei doesn't hide. You can't make her hide. She can investigate, look closer at things (even as the player it seems like a really, REALLY bad idea) and you can run, but Rei herself cannot hide. She has no hiding spots. She boldly opens doors that, in retrospect, maybe shouldn't be opened. She may have second thoughts on the matter, but she'll do it anyway.

Rei is, overall, a quiet individual who now wants to do more than survive-she wants to live. She wants to live, and heal. It won't be easy, since she's not very outgoing as some, can be easily startled in spiritual matters, and can be independent. But, with her resourceful nature, her independent streak, grumptation, strong empathy, and pride, she may do well when it comes to becoming happy again.

That is, if all goes well in Deerington.

Personal Moral Codes:

Rei isn't someone who would go out of her way to hurt someone, much less kill. In that, she's average; even in desperate times violence is a last resort, and she can, under some circumstances, empathize with the other party. Stealing or borrowing is a different story. If it belongs to someone, and the situation is normal, she's not going to take things that belong to others. However, she may ask to take items-usually paper or photos-to add them to her files to understand the various circumstances that are going on. She may also take something that's offered as a weapon or as a useful tool at face value, not knowing if it's been stolen from someone else, or borrow it for a short or long period. The more dire the circumstances, the more likely she's to take something without thinking of it.

In short, violence she's unlikely to breech. Stealing she may do. Lying-pretty average, in that she may forget, she may tell a white lie, or something similar. She's not the best person in the world, but she's not the worst either. She tries to do her best, given the circumstances, and she doesn't go out of her way to bend the rules to get what she wants.

Most of the time anyway.

Insecurities/Personal Demons:

-Recovering from Survivors guilt; she's on the mend but she still has lingering feelings on the matter where she survived and her fiancee did not
-Being in a dream; She's been through something like this shortly before, and now she may wonder if she did something wrong, or that she did something to cause this to happen to herself and/or others
-Being away from friends; she's worried that her friends will see her in a coma, and that they'll feel the same she did in seeing them unable to wake up
-Friends she makes here; she'll worry about their safety, if they can get back, if she can be helpful
-Helplessness; she's not good at dealing with helplessness, or lack of control. At best she gets restless, at worst, she does something really stupid to gain control.

Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses:

Abilities: Photographer, including photographer development and techniques
Investigation: amateur sleuthing, but she can put the pieces together and figure out the story, given enough time to look around and help

Powers:
Sixth sense: Born with it, this allows her to do multiple things, the main being seeing spirits. This also means that she's more visible to ghosts and under the right circumstances, is far more likely to be possessed, particularly by powerful spirits.
Past Visions: Sometimes she can touch people or objects and see visions of the past of what's happened around that person or object. Sometimes it's as simple as walking into a location though that's very rare.
Dreams: In the game, she's able to travel along Kei's and Miku's dreams. It seems she's unable to affect them, and she's basically along for the ride as an observer.
Camera Obsurca: Using the camera and the various grades of film, she can do various things including:
Exorcism: Exorcises spirits from existing, or at least from that location for a certain amount of time
Taking photos of the unseen: Where objects or useful locations are revealed, particularly when the film has developed
Repulse: repulsing spirits via channeling her sixth sense through the camera.

There are various upgrades that can be done with the camera, such as making the spirits slow down, but that would be something mentioned during the reward section, as I plan to bring the camera as is.

Weakness:
Sixth sense: it's always on. Always. She can't turn it off. It also makes her more visble to spirits.
Fighting ability: She doesn't know how to fight. She only knows how to run away, and use her camera as a weapon.
Home skills: She's messy and she's not very good at household chores, including cooking.
Reckless: When motivated, she can make some pretty reckless choices.

Ability/Power/Magic Warping: If there is a need to power warp, I have a couple of suggestions:

-The sensation that she's being watched, on and off. Maybe she sees something in the corner of her eye, maybe she hears whispers of people that were once here. It's difficult to say. Is it real? Or is her mind playing tricks on her? It's difficult to say.
-If she shares dreams, she can either find herself sleep walking or sleep mimicing what other people do in the dreams, without being aware until she's woken up.
-seeing past events means she's also slammed by past emotions, which feel like her own, for good or for bad. She has no control when this will happen either.
-She attracts creatures-maybe the deer, maybe the crows, maybe the authority-every time she tries to repulse ghosts using the camera.
-Being touched by spiritual creatures or people causes markings to flare up in her skin. Maybe antler based? (taking this from when the ghosts touch her in canon, that her curse tattoo of snake and holly flares up on the skin)

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Yes

What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: I like some of the unexpected things. I like not just using the feelings of isolation (which is great) but the small moments, the breaths of relief that comes before horror rises. The themes I enjoy are not just horror and anger, but hope, and kindness. I like to see what happens when a person is put through a dire situation, and how they change because of it. How their morals can be conflicted with practicality. I guess you can see I like to see the theme of seeing what people become, or showing who they truly are under pressure.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Not that I can think of
