Character: Rei Kurosawa
Canon: Fatal Frame Three
Version: Game
Canon Point: After the completion of Hour XII, before the start of Hour XIII (basically after all the other characters are taken, and before she goes to sleep)
Age: 23
Gender: Female
History: History can be found here. http://www.cameraslens.com/fatalframewiki/index.php5?title=Rei or here http://www.cameraslens.com/fatalframewiki/index.php5?title=Fatal_Frame_III
Personality: The first thing we need to know about Rei is how she is under post traumatic depression. After her fiancée, Yuu died in a car accident Rei withdrew from the world, feeling remorse for her actions. Before the start of the game, he considered herself to be her fiancées opposite; while he was quiet and kind, she was. more outgoing. When the game starts, it is approximately two months after her fiancée died and she has since become withdrawn, quiet, and less inclined to socialize. Rei relied on letters, phone calls, and Miku, her live in assistant, to stay on top of her responsibilities and to take care of her basic needs. Otherwise, Rei tended to avoid social interactions as much as possible.
But with the curse inflicted by the Manor of Sleep, Rei does not allow herself to live in a passive state. What motivates Rei at first is terror at what she dreamt, curiosity of the location’s legends, and most of all, the brief sight of Yuu walking away. But as Rei goes deeper into the Manor, she realizes that her life is not the only one at stake. There is Miku, as well as Kei (Yuu’s friend and work collaborator), and Kei’s niece. All of them are in danger, and Rei witnesses first hand what happens when the tattoos take over completely. She knows what happens if the person is spirited away. There was the history of others that suffered due to the tattooed woman, and others within the Manor of Sleep.
Even before she witnessed the spiriting away, Rei did have options. She could have run from it, pretend that the dreams didn’t matter. She could have waited to have the tattoos cover her, and be spirited away. She could have wallowed in depression, or...taken the final option.Rei could have done all she could do follow Yuu right to the end, regardless of the spirits within the Manor.
But Rei did not let her fear of the manor overtake her. Not completely. When she could, Rei defended herself. She tried to get special photographs from the Camera Obscura developed and investigated, learnt what she could of the Manor and how to bring the curse to the end. She even left the house of her own accord to visit the victim she met in the Manor of Sleep in the hospital.
Though she does not have the expertise in the subject of the occult, Rei learned what she could in order to stop the cycle from continuing-for herself and for anyone else who suffers from a loss.
While Rei is not sociable, she still has intelligence, strength of character, and gumption. Though she is frightened by her nightmares and various things that happen throughout her life, Rei does not let it stop her. She fights ghosts by using the Camera Obscura, luck, and knowledge. It isn’t easy, especially with the ghosts are trying to kill Rei using curses, strangulation, short swords and stone stakes.
This isn’t to say that Rei doesn’t falter. She cries in the shower when she misses Yuu; she’s startled and frightened by the ghosts who stalk her, day or night. But most often, she is still walking through with determination to break the curse.
She is coming from a canon point where she is alone, but for the notes and recordings. She can’t help Miku wake up; Kei his in a similar state. What Kei believed to be the way to stop the tattooed priestess was wrong, and Rei could do nothing to help. But she is trying, with difficulty to find the way to break the curse before she is spirited away like the others. Rei is still burdened with the guilt of living, while Yuu did not.
It is only at the end of the game that she will finally understand, and accept that she has to live-not only for herself, but for Yuu, and the others that still live. Even if it hurts, even if it won’t bring Yuu back, she will remember, and honor him by living and letting herself heal.
Fears: Losing Yuu (including memories of him) - Yuu was someone quite special to her, and it has been theorized that he and Miku were the closest thing she had to family. Whether this is true or not, Rei loved Yuu deeply, and is not taking his death well. To lose the memory of him, or to have it warped or to have him walk away...she would have difficulty handling it.
Being alone-Though she can handle being alone, being alone with creatures that want to kill you? Terrifying. It’s not an easy thing to face. She will likely consider herself alone unless she develops some close relationships. You don’t know the people here, you don’t know what’s going on or what to do, how else can a person react?
Being unable to fight back- Considering that she’s been fighting back, abit unconventionally in Fatal Frame III, she’s not used to just taking things laying down. To find out that her weapons are ineffective, or all she can hope to do is run well...scary.
Losing herself-Being subject to the curse of Snake and Holly, Rei is aware of what the possible ending could be-she could be completely overwhelmed, and be more or less a tattooed covered fury. While that may sound fun to some characters-allowing themselves to become almost beserker like that is-not having a sense of self, knowing what she was and lashing out at innocent people is horrifying. She wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Ghosts of the Manor-Face it, having women covered in needles, a man with a butcher knife the size of his arm, and little shrine maidens trying to stake you down? Anyone would want to run from that.
B>Weaknesses: Rei is human. She’s not a superhero; she’s not a brainiac. She can’t even fire a gun. She’s best at photography. While she is likely the fastest of all the female characters played in Fatal Frame, as well as the best stamina, she is not an athlete. Rei is pretty average, as far as I know. If there are any ghosts, drugs or creatures that will make her think she is seeing Yuu, she is hooped-since she is still in love with him, and still guilty for what she has done. The same may apply to Miku or Kei, but more in the sense of attempting to save them. Problems that may arise with her camera will also leave her generally defenseless.
Mundane Strengths/Abilities: -Rei is a professional photographer, with the skills that come with it. With the right materials, she is able to develop film, take professional photographs, and use the lighting to bring out what she wants in people or locations.
-Rei is also a woman who is of average health, strength, balance and flexibility. She has been known to crawl into small spaces, run from ghosts (much faster then the younger women in the series) and balance on roof beams.
-Amateur researcher and investigator. Mostly, she knows what looks like points of interest, and takes notes on the subject, points and adding as she learns more about the location, person or object. Sometimes, she’ll add her own theories to the matter in question. Mostly though, she knows what needs to be looked into, full of organization for the notes and connecting things together, if not the actual research itself.
-Use of the camera obscura. She can use this camera in order to exorcise ghosts, or repel them for a time. Though the camera responds best to people’s sensitivity to spirits or sixth sense, Rei can use it, and repel most spirits in the average fight sequence.
Sensitivity/Magical Ability: It could be argued that due to the curse of snake and holly, that Rei is more sensitive to the spirits. Normally, she does not see visions, or ghosts; most likely she did not believe in such before Yuu’s death. But with the curse progressing, Rei may get glimpses in the corner of her eye, or see things that disappear with focus; other times she may dismiss them as visual hallucinations, or dreams. The tattoo of snake and holly, which enables Rei’s sensitivity goes from her shoulder blades to her calves, which slowly fade as she wakes up.The tattoo also causes pain, when it appears on her skin each morning, like a bad bruise. This, however, will change should she be canon updated to the end of the game, and she will lose her sensitivity.
Also, the Camera Obscura will be brought with her, which is capable of exorcising ghosts, depending on their strength. This can be discussed, and the camera may be less effective-as it would be without upgrades, and the lowest grade of film.
Supply List: The Camera Obscura (known for exercising ghosts, or at least repelling them for a time), twenty five reels of low grade film. Possibly five herbal medicine. All of which will be carried within her camera bag.
Game Transfers: Non applicable.
Sample RP post: It was time to end the madness. It was time for everything to stop-all the horror and madness. They had taken Miku, using the love of her brother. They had taken Kei, for his determination and his folly. His niece was lost in her guilt, from what little view she had been granted. And now...now, what was to be done?
Rei was the only one left. The photographer was the only one with the power to change any of this. She had to do something, before she became another victim of the Manor of Sleep-no, the Katze shrine. Of the Otherworld.
The thought of fighting the tattooed priestess frazzled her nerves. Her hands were shook during dinner, but she forced herself to eat. She made sure to feed Miku’s cat. Maybe she should arrange someone to take care of her...?
No. No, she wouldn’t. Because everyone was going to survive. Everyone. She closed her eyes, and forced herself to breathe evenly. Everything was going to be all right. Everyone would survive.
At least, that’s what she told herself as she prepared herself for bed. She knew that things were about to get worse, and she was alone. There would be no one to help her here.
She forced herself to relax. It wasn’t as hard as it should have been. The curse again, making her want to sleep. To end it in such a passive fashion. But Rei was not going to die today. Was she?
Rei had no idea. She slipped into bed, and closed her eyes, expecting the visions and the manor to rush in all at once.
But it was strange. That did not happen. Though she felt her body rest, her mind felt lucid and restless. Since the visions did not come, the whispers not starting, Rei decided to rouse herself. Perhaps she could get a glass of water, or make sure the cat had its litter box cleaned.
But when she opened her eyes, it was a different story.
She was not on a bed. She was not even laying down; somehow, she had become crouched, hugging herself. Rei felt confused as she took stock of the situation. She was dressed in her usual garb for the dreams, the Camera Obscura by her side. There was a bag beside her, which after she peeked within, she found it contained film. How unusual. And no candle of purification. No misma in the air, making it hard to breathe. Slowly, she drew herself onto her feet, and glanced around the room.
She had never been here before. Not observing with Miku or Kei, or by herself. This was...new. And it gave her a chill. Rei did not like such surprises. She had enough of those as of late. Surprises meant that something bad was going to happen.
But Rei forced herself to load the film into the camera, and to take stock of her surroundings. Whatever would happen...she would be ready. Or not. Maybe, just maybe, she would see Yuu in this dream.
